The works of several PNC students will soon be available for free download on  Dr. Bethany Lee’s Advanced Composition course is putting together an anthology of the senior English Capstone projects that were completed in the fall semester of 2013.  These projects range from literary analyses of classic novels to a fantastic creative writing piece.

Dr. Lee wanted to give students the opportunity to work with the English Capstone projects to give students experience in editing projects.  Dr. Lee also said this type of project could give students in future English Capstone classes a reference on how to create their own Capstone project.  By releasing these projects on Amazon for download, it gives Purdue North Central even more exposure to the public sphere to let the public know PNC has a wide selection of intelligent and talented students.

Kristen Bird-Sheldon, one of the six students whose projects will be available in this anthology, wrote about the treatment of marriage in two works of 19th century women’s fiction and how these works coincided with Margaret Fuller’s work “Woman in the Nineteenth Century.” “Because of this opportunity, I feel that my work can be polished to reflect the hard work that went into it,” said Bird-Sheldon. She goes on to say, “There was a ton of hard work that went into researching and writing my Capstone, and having it included in the anthology adds a layer of satisfaction to the project that simply receiving a grade does not. While I am proud of the grade that I earned, seeing it in print will be even better.”

Andrew Gilles chose to write about the “influences in J.R.R. Tolkien’s academic, regional, and writing environments which inspired his creation/defining of his technique Mythopoeic Sub-Creation.” Gilles stated he chose this topic because, “I have an interest in the development of mental technologies/processes that advance artistic endeavors and, in general, affect the way in which we think, perform, or develop our artistic talents. I am excited to have this published in an anthology because it gave me a reason to revisit the project and begin thinking of ways to branch out with my interest and previous research. It provided the inspiration to do some editing that may not have been done until much later, if at all. I see this as a way of professionalizing an academic experience.”

Finally, Alexandria Para chose to write a fictional short story. Para’s main character, John Smith, “is going to reflect upon the murder of his girlfriend, their relationship, their childhoods, and the revenge he took on the man he believes to have truly killed her. The story will take an interesting turn when it is revealed that the main character has multiple personalities and has no recollection of viciously murdering his girlfriend. However, he does recall murdering her lover whom he believed to be the one responsible for her murder.”

The students in the Fall 2013 English Capstone class have all worked very hard on their respective projects, and it is a joy and a privilege for their works to be available for the public to see.
